Signed George Rives. Witnesses: Absalom Atkinson, John Atkinson, and William Ezell, Jr. Acknowledged in Court on May 5, 1748, at which time Mary Rives, wife of the said George Rives, appeared and volutarily relinquished her right of dower. I found this information in a letter written by John Patterson MADISON in 1948. Hope it will help someone, as it has nothing to do with anything I am researching. This is transcribed directly as written. There is some limited additional information on the descendants of Mary RIVES and William EATON…please email directly for more.
1. William RIVES, immigrant, formerly of Oxfordshire, England, married ——– Records indicate that he came to Virginia about 1654.
2. George RIVES of Prince George Co., born in 1660, married ——– He made a deposition in that county Sept. 8, 1719, concerning a runaway mulatto slave in which he gave his age as 59. He stated that while trading in the Province of South Carolina in April of that year he often saw and conversed with Jack BUNCH, mulatto slave belonging to Samuel HARWOOD, Jr. of Prince George Co. The slave, he said, was in the company of Mr. Robert HICKS. His impression was that he would have returned home but for the fact that he was forcibly detained by one Captain HOW and other traders.
3. William RIVES, Planter of Prince George Co., married Elizabeth ——– Records of the county show that she relinquished the right of dower September 12, 1727 to Thomas JONES in 206 acres of land which had been sold by her husband to JONES. William RIVES was born about 1683.
4. Mary RIVES, born about 1695, married William EATON (1690-1759) of York and Prince George Cos., Va., and Edgecombe and Granville Cos., N.C., known as Colonel William EATON. He was a member of the General Assembly of North Carolina in 1746 and other years. He was also a colonel of Militia and sheriff. He moved to North Carolina from Prince George Co. in 1725 after marrying Mary RIVES in that county.
